Right now, the U.S. Congress is working
on a budget and bills to fund the government for this year. There is now a risk Congress may slash even the most effective conservation programs in across-the-board spending cuts.
The timing couldn't be worse. Migratory
birds are in trouble. Habitat loss and other threats are causing dramatic
population declines in species like Kentucky Warbler (shown). Since birds are
sensitive indicators of how we are protecting our environment as a whole, the
decline of migratory birds signals a potential crisis that Congress must act
now to reverse. Positive steps forward would be to sufficiently fund the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act, Migratory
Bird Joint Ventures, ESA Recovery, Farm Bill Conservation Programs, and EPA's Pesticides programs at the highest level possible.
In addition, we anticipate numerous amendments to the budget to cut conservation programs and eliminate environmental protections. One of the “riders” in last year's
spending bill prohibits funding Endangered Species Act protections for
the Greater Sage-Grouse. The species would have no
safety net if populations continue their rapid decline in spite of substantial current conservation efforts.
Please act now! Tell your Senators and
Representative: Make protecting migratory birds, endangered species, the Greater
Sage-Grouse, and other wildlife a priority. Thank you.

As one of the more than 47 million Americans who enjoys watching and feeding birds, I urge you to pass a budget that funds bird conservation programs like the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA), Migratory Bird Joint Ventures (JV), ESA Recovery, Farm Bill Conservation Programs and the Environmental Protection Agency Pesticides program at the highest level possible.
