Welcome to Kate's Legal Beagle page
Your donation to my team--the Legal Beagles-- goes to the Legal Council for Health Justice. We expanded in 2016. The AIDS Legal Council, one of our main programs, has been assisting people living with HIV for 25 years. Our new programs are the SSI Homeless Outreach Project and the Children's Medical Legal Partnership. Last year, our staff of attorneys, legal advocates and policy changers, assisted more than 2, 000 people with close to 3,000 legal issues. Now that's some serious muscle!
I want to tell you about one of my clients, who I will call Mr. B. Mr. B lived outdoors for many years and was affectionately regarded in the Chicago neighborhood where he slept under a plastic tarp. Last year, he lost the ablity to stand or walk, While this impaiirment progressively developed, it worsened signficantly during the Polar Vortex of Winter 2019. The Thresholds Mobile Assessment Unit, one of our partners, met us at this client's usual sleeping place and we accompanied him to SSA. Unforrtunately the security guard at SSA mispercieved Mr B and he was asked to leave. Despite the fact that Mr. B was asked to leave the SSA office, the fierce advocacy of our Avodah member Ari Rothman saved the day and the application stlil was submitted. Mr. B had years of Emergency Room visits in which he was understood to be showing signs of psychosis. This, and the fact that Mr. B was committed to a mental health hospital for three months and court mandated to recieve medication, convinced SSA he was eligible for disability benefits. Mr. B never left the mental health hospital but died on Monday, August 19th. Our team and Thresholds MAU mourn his loss in the world. His was a bright and friendly presence that will be missed. I tell you this story to illustrate the people that our legal teams see every day. I currently have 75 clients, and 20 on a waiting list. I invited you to help us continue our on the street work with clients like Mr. B.
Join our team or throw us a bone with a donation--every dollar counts! With your generous support, we will help even more people this coming year. A huge thanks from me and everyone at LCHJ!
