AIDS Run/Walk - Sergio 2019
LGBTQ+ history was not covered in school and once I started reading about it on my own, I could not stop. There was so much I did not know about my own community! One of the most heartbreaking things I learned was just how many people were affected by the AIDS crisis during the 80's. I was extremely saddened by all the people we lost - an entire generation - and the stories of the hardships they went through. I was equally inspired by the nurses, activists, and allies that bravely fought to bring attention to the crisis and supported the HIV/AIDS patients.
We've come a long way since then - mostly thanks to the early struggles and bravery of these individuals. However, there is still more work to be done! We need to continue to fight for easy and affordable access to medical services as well as to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) does great work for the community in these areas and I am proud to participate again this year in the AIDS Run/Walk for the 5th time.
Over the last 5 years, I've been incredibly humbled by the support of my friends, family, and coworkers. If you would like to join me once again in supporting AFC - please consider making a donation in my name or joining us on race day (October 5th).
