Tell Congress: Protect Farmland Conservation Funding

farmer standing in harvested field

It took three years of hard work to pass the much-delayed 2014 Farm Bill. But a great deal of what we achieved with the effort could disappear in a single budget process.

On top of the $4 billion cuts to conservation programs, the Senate and House Appropriations Committees are proposing to cut nearly a half-billion dollars from important farmland conservation programs, including

  • $60 million from the new Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP)

  • $250 million from the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)

We need your voice today! The Appropriations Committees just voted to approve these cuts and Congress could finalize them in a matter of weeks.

Support Conservation Funding

Dear [Decision Maker],

As Congress works on fiscal year 2015 spending, support for farmland conservation programs must be a top priority. Farm bill conservation programs have never been more important for family farmers and their communities.

Conservation programs offer crucial support for voluntary efforts to protect water quality, conserve soil, and protect working agricultural lands. These programs not only conserve and protect our nation's natural resources, they also help keep America's working lands in the hands of farm families for generations.

The recently passed 2014 Farm Bill already included $4 billion in savings from conservation, and sequestration cuts which will occur over the next ten years will cut an additional $2 billion. In FY 2015 alone, sequestration cuts to farmland conservation programs will generate more than $265 million in savings. These important programs are just beginning to be implemented under the new law and should not be cut further.

Thank you for your support for farmland conservation funding to continue these important benefits for years to come.

Sincerely,
