Support the BMP Challenge to Help Shrink Dead Zones

Dear [Decision Maker],

I'm writing to ask for your support in making the Best Management Practice (BMP) Challenge a permanent conservation program. The BMP Challenge helps farmers reduce the use of nitrogen fertilizer that causes hypoxic dead zones--and save money at the same time.

The BMP Challenge is an innovative program that protects farmers' income when they adopt nutrient management, conservation tillage or other best management practices that help protect our soil and water. The BMP Challenge helps farmers reduce their nitrogen applications and save money.

This three-year project, begun in 2005, is funded in part by a USDA NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant. To date, the BMP Challenge has provided impressive results in all areas--environmental stewardship, farmer profit and crop yields. I ask for your support to ensure that it becomes a permanent conservation program.

Sincerely,
