Safe Harbor at AHS

Hurricane Harvey – What’s Happening at AHS & How You Can Help

AHS is a resource for pets and the people that love them in times of disaster and this time is no different.  In preparation to respond to Hurricane Harvey and the continued storm, we have activated the AHS Emergency Pet Shelter.

A large number of additional animals from several devastated areas including Houston will be coming to AHS. That number will continue to increase over the coming days. Stay tuned and watch our Facebook page for updates.

We are so thankful to generous supporters and amazing partners helping us in our efforts. We continue to receive critical need items from our Amazon Wishlist and on 8/30 H-E-B delivered pallets of crates, food and other supplies for our rescue efforts. Roger Beasley Imports has provided a transportation vehicle to AHS to take shelter animals from affected areas to areas outside of the state so that in-state shelters can take on more animals as search and rescue efforts continue.

We also continue to support the City of Austin response efforts by providing veterinary care to owned evacuated pets who are staying in the co-located shelters here in Austin. Animals who cannot stay with their families at the co-located shelters are being housed at AHS.  We anticipate large numbers of evacuees and their pets will be coming to Austin in the coming days.  We will continue to help these families to make sure their pets are healthy and safe. Below is one of their stories.

Shawn & Roco + Mimi

As Hurricane Harvey began to make its way to the Texas coast, Shawn of Rockport, Texas was preparing to weather the storm. Many people in the Rockport area had already fled to outlying towns, but there were some who stayed behind. Little did Shawn know, this would be one of the most terrifying events he had ever experienced. “We ended up being buried in our house. We live next door to a recycle yard so there were pieces of metal and boats, you name it, on top of us.” Shawn, his wife and their two dogs, Roco and Mimi, were able to dig themselves out of the debris on Saturday morning. “I was a Smoke Jumper in California for the National Forrest Service for 17 years and this was the scariest thing I have ever been through.” Our hearts go out to all of the people and animals affected by Hurricane Harvey – AHS will be able to serve them because of our amazing supporters and partners.

How you can help:

  • Help us provide safe shelter by making a donation. Your donation, no matter the amount, will help give animals the safe place and support they need. This is our most critical need at this point as we are running out of space to store donated items.

  • Open your home as a loving foster by filling out this form. Foster homes are critical during disasters. Sign up now

  • Volunteer your time as we will need emergency volunteers in addition to the support of our current volunteers. We will get back to you as quickly as we can after your form has been submitted.

  • Donate supplies from our Amazon wish list including stainless steel food and water bowls, medium or large crates, and canned cat food. Gift cards are also welcome as they allow us to adapt to our changing needs.

Thank you for unleashing hope during this time of uncertainty and every day for animals in need.

***Please stay tuned for more updates and further needs.***
