STEM Education: Ensuring the Future of America's Workforce

defense image

America’s aerospace and defense companies face ongoing difficulties in hiring because not enough applicants possess the education and training in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines necessary for certain positions. Today some jobs - especially in cyber security, software engineering and systems engineering - go unfilled despite significant unemployment in the economy. To sustain technological dominance, U.S. aerospace and defense companies require the top talent in the world. Due to the classified nature of our most sensitive and demanding military and national security projects, we must hire people who can obtain security clearances. This means that many of our positions must be filled by U.S. citizens. We need Washington’s support to overcome these challenges by devoting adequate resources and attention to STEM education and workforce preparation.

Support STEM education and a skilled workforce

Dear [Decision Maker],

We Need Your Help to Build the Workforce of the Future

America's aerospace and defense companies face ongoing difficulties in hiring because not enough applicants possess the education and training in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines necessary for certain positions. Today some jobs - especially in cyber security, software engineering and systems engineering - go unfilled despite significant unemployment in the economy. Further, American students continue to score below the worldwide average in math and science proficiency. To sustain America's technological leadership, we need your support for providing adequate resources and attention to STEM education and workforce preparation.

Concerted Collaborative Action is the Answer

To ensure that we are able to replenish our nation's aerospace and defense workforce and that U.S. students catch up in STEM achievement, I encourage you to support STEM education and workforce development , activities and policies that have proven effective.

Key actions needed are:

* Sponsor STEM programs that have proven effectiveness in engaging students and inspiring them to pursue and persist in STEM courses.

* Make and expand opportunities for STEM professionals working in our industry to serve as role models and mentors to inspire youth to consider aerospace careers.

* Support programs demonstrated to be best practices in sustained engagement of females and underrepresented minorities in STEM.

* Provide internships and co-ops for promising young students.

* Partner with all interested stakeholders - businesses, K-12 schools and programs, higher education, key governŽment bodies and the philanthropic community - at the federal, state and local levels in a systemic approach to help grow the STEM workforce.
o Align postsecondary education with the STEM job opportunities available now and in coming years.
o Ensure that students acquire not only STEM expertise but other requisite 21 century workforce competencies (problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, effective communications) to be career ready.
o Modernize the nation's Career Technical Education system to provide students the skills training and preparation to qualify for real existing and future jobs.

WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS. YOUR INVOLVEMENT IS CRITICAL.
Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
