Ask your state lawmakers to vote YES on bills to support living organ donors

New York's AB765/S514 sponsored by Assemblymembers Dick Gottfried (D-75), Felix Ortiz Jr. (D-51), Alfred Taylor (D-71) and Senators Dave Carlucci (D-38), Todd Kaminsky (D-9), and Tim Kennedy (D-63) allows a taxpayer or spouse of a taxpayer to deduct costs related to the taxpayer’s organ donation. This includes child care costs.

Support organ donors

The Living Donor Support Act sponsored by 63 Assemblymembers and Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-33) provides state reimbursements to living organ donors for medical and associated expenses incurred as a result of the organ donation.

S1149 sponsored by Senators Dave Carlucci (D-38) and Todd Kaminsky (D-9) provides a tax deduction for non-reimbursed expenses relating to travel, lodging, medical expenses and lost wages for donating an organ.

While most transplanted organs are from deceased donors, patients may also receive organs from living donors. Living donation offers an alternative for individuals awaiting transplantation from a deceased donor and increases the existing organ supply. Almost 6,000 living-donor transplants were performed last year in the United States, including 548 in New York State. Kidneys are the most common organ transplanted from living donors, followed by liver and lung.

Nationwide, more than 114,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant right now--including nearly 97,000 who are waiting for a kidney.

Providing incentives and removing financial burdens for living donors can lead to an increase in organ donations.

Please contact your state lawmakers and ask them to support this important legislation.

Please vote YES on bills to support living organ donors!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and as someone who has been affected personally by kidney disease, I am writing to request that you support AB765/S514, The Living Donor Support Act, and S1149, which remove barriers for living organ donors.

These important bills would remove some financial burdens for living donors, which could lead to an increase in organ donations in our state.

While most transplanted organs are from deceased donors, patients may also receive organs from living donors. Living donation offers an alternative for individuals awaiting transplantation from a deceased donor and increases the existing organ supply. Almost 6,000 living-donor transplants were performed last year in the United States. Kidneys are the most common organ transplanted from living donors, followed by liver and lung. Both living and deceased donation offer hope to more than 114,000 people waiting for an organ transplant right now--including nearly 97,000 who are waiting for a kidney transplant.
