KidneyX

Congress funded KidneyX at $5 million. Please send them an email to thank them.

KidneyX is the Kidney Innovation Accelerator. It is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the American Society of Nephrology that seeks to accelerate innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases. It does this by engaging researchers, innovators, investors, and others to develop and bring breakthrough therapies to patients through a series of prize competitions. It is these grants to private companies that will spur innovation in kidney care.

In July 2019, the Administration announced an Executive Order on Advancing American Kidney Health, which encouraged the development of an implantable and wearable artificial kidneys through KidneyX. The President and HHS Secretary Alex Azar understand the need for innovation. Congressional support was needed to ensure there is the government backing of this important program.

The American Society of Nephrology committed $25 million dollars, and Congress funded KidneyX at $5 million. The funds are needed to ensure there is innovation in the prevention and treatment of end-stage renal disease.

Thank you for funding KidneyX at $5 million

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and someone who has been touched by kidney disease, I am writing to thank you for funding KidneyX at $5 million.

The kidney world has not seen the innovation in therapies as other medical conditions. Essentially, there are still two ways to address kidney failure: dialysis or transplant. It is the same two options that individuals had forty years ago. Innovation is needed, and KidneyX is an important tool to generate new ideas.

In July 2019, the Administration announced an Executive Order on Advancing American Kidney Health, which encouraged the development of an implantable and wearable artificial kidney through KidneyX. Congress needed to fund this program to achieve a goal that could improve the lives of thousands of kidney patients. Hence, thank you!

The investment is needed. Currently, Medicare pays $34 billion on dialysis. Kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States. There are almost 500,000 people on dialysis. We need new ideas to prevent and treat kidney disease.

The American Society of Nephrology committed $25 million dollars.

Sincerely,
