ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Progress

March Madness

The ALS Association is excited to offer an activity to connect our community and encourage a little competition. As always, we strive to discover treatments and a cure for ALS; and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.

Welcome to the start of a beautiful MARCH MADNESS! The rules are simple. After Selection Sunday, get your brackets filled out before the start of the first tournament game, then sit back and watch the MADNESS unfold. You have the picks; we have the prizes! There is a prize for the winner along with exclusive yearlong bragging rights. The last place receives a prize too, afterall, we know you tried your hardest! Additionally, everyone is also entered into a random prize drawing for each round.

Explaining the points:

You do not have to keep track of your points. Poolhost does it for you. In case you want to know about the Seed Bonus and Underdog Bonus here is a breakdown of the points.

Seed Bonus

The seed bonus uses the picked teams' seed value to increase the points possible for each pick. For example, the Round Weight is set to 2, and a player correctly picks the 12 seed to beat the 5 seed.

If the Add Seed option is selected for that round, the player will be awarded 12 + 2 = 14 points.

If the Multiply Seed option is selected for that round, the player will be awarded 12 * 2 = 24 points.

If the player had picked the 5 seed to win, the points total for that pick would be either 5 + 2 = 7 points or 5 * 2 = 10 points if the 5 seed wins, depending on which Seed Bonus option is used.

To summarize:
Seed Bonus (Add Seed) = Seed Value + Round Weight
Seed Bonus (Multiply Seed) = Seed Value * Round Weight

Underdog Bonus

If you enable this choice for a given round, if a player picks a team with a lower seed than its opponent to win a game, the player will also get the difference between the picked underdog's seed value and the favorite's seed value.

For example, if a player picks a 14 seed to beat a 3 seed, if the 14 seed wins the game, the player will get 14 - 3 = 11 additional points. The bigger the upset, the more points the player gets for the pick.

THE POINT DIFFERENCE IS CALCULATED USING THE ACTUAL TEAM MATCHUP, NOT THE PICKED MATCHUP!

If you pick a 13 seed to meet a 5 seed in the second round and have the 13 seed winning but the actual matchup was the 13 vs. the 12 seed, you'd only get 1 'underdog' bonus point instead of 8.

Also, if, in a game, you picked a team that would be an 'underdog' but the actual matchup makes the team you picked to win the ‘favorite,’ you will NOT get the 'underdog' points.
