2015 ONE DOLLAR DIFFERENCE EVERGREEN CHAPTER

Ragnar Relay to honor Steve Krohn

I run because I can. When I get tired, I remember those who can’t run, what they would give to have this simple gift I take for granted, and I run harder for them. I know they would do the same for me.

It is with this thought in mind that this year four teams of twelve runners each have come together for a cause that is greater than ourselves. All 48 of us have joined to run until we can’t. We run until our legs get tired, and then we run with our hearts. We do it all for our colleague and friend, Steve Krohn, who has ALS. This is an opportunity for you to help us in our mission to run in Steve’s honor and to fight ALS.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. This is a devastating and fatal disease affecting 20,000 Americans with 5,000 new cases in the United States each year. We want to do something about it and need your help to make an impact.

Two years ago when a team of runners was planning to run our first Ragnar Relay Northwest Passage, we received word that our dear friend and colleague Steve Krohn was diagnosed with ALS. ALS may have ended Steve’s professional career, however he has not retired from living a full life to the best of his abilities. Steve continues to be a student of the world, and a teacher to all of us in everything that is important in life – love, happiness, hope and goodness. Seeing light in darkness; maintaining a strong, positive attitude when it would be so easy to crumble to the ground and just give up. In this sense, Steve is the strongest runner any of us knows.

The Ask

Since 2013, when we learned Steve was diagnosed with ALS, we have shown our love and support for him by dedicating our 200-mile Northwest Passage Ragnar Relay to him.

In 2013, we had one team. In 2014, we grew to an incredible four teams, showing just how much our community can come together for a cause and support our friend and colleague. For 2015, we are running four teams strong once more! It is an incredible bonding experience to have with our fellow team members, most of whom are co-workers from every level in the firm or alumni and friends of the firm, and it is an honor to run in the race. With the miles and miles of our shoes hitting pavement,  many times not seeing a soul other than the passing vans honking at us in support, we think of our co-worker, whose battle is far harder than our own, and then we run. We run until we can’t, because we know our friend who is so special to us will also run until he can’t, and make the most out of every moment of life.

It is both a challenge and a blessing to be able to participate in the Ragnar Relay and help fight ALS each mile we run. Please consider donating to the 2015 race and help us find a cure for ALS.  Your donations will go directly to support those families in the Pacific Northwest who have been affected by ALS.

Please join in our mission to help fight ALS. And run until you can't!
