What is the Sally Panfel Program?
The program provides persons with ALS and their families grants to receive in-home care and respite,  assisting ALS patients with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, and safe transfers) and combatting caregiver burnout.  For each $20 that is donated, a patient’s caregiver can get one hour off. Family caregivers work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and even a short amount of time off can make a huge difference.
My connection
I became passionate about helping ALS patients and their families when my Aunt Sally was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. A onetime UGA basketball player originally from Smyrna, GA, Sally was a tireless caregiver for her family before ultimately needing help to move and communicate, as ALS eventually prevents all voluntary muscle functioning. My family was fortunate to be able to hire help for my aunt so that my uncle could continue working, but many families struggle to afford care for their loved one living with ALS. Thus, my family started a program through the ALS Association of Georgia to provide caregivers for ALS patients.
