My mind works as well as it ever has, but my body isn’t the same.

My legs no longer move without help from other muscle groups, simply now serving as ballasts to keep me upright. I have a belly that flaps and folds over elastic waistbands, no longer held in by abdominal muscles and reminding me of that chubby preteen which still haunts. My arms are becoming weaker by the week and not all my digits listen to my brain’s commands.

I have very much become a prisoner within a physical form that is foreign to me.

But that isn’t even the worst of it because ALS is relentless in taking everything from everyone it has ever inflicted.

I turn 50 in just a few days and this incurable disease is poised to steal much more from me. Time with friends and family. The blessing of watching my son become a man. And the golden years with the love of my life.

So instead of gifts or birthday wishes, I’m asking you to donate to the ALS Association. Your support will help continue the fight for more research, as well as advocacy and care services for those in need.
