Thanks for visiting the team page for BlockSpaces and Tampa Bay Bitcoin. Together we are challenging ALS and making a difference in the lives of those impacted by this devastating disease.

All of our team donations this year are in honor of John Naur, who is living with ALS and is a dear family friend of our colleague and Challenge teammate, Ben Schroth.

How It All Started: Hal Finney Tweets He’s “Running Bitcoin”
Few realized at the time just how significant a tweet from Hal Finney dated January 10, 2009 would ultimately be. The tweet containing only the phrase “running Bitcoin” was among the first the internet had ever heard of the cryptocurrency.

The tweet arrived only seven days following the Genesis Block, and Finney himself was the first to ever be on the receiving end of a BTC transaction. What Finney was referring to was the fact he was running a Bitcoin “node.” According to Bitcoin.org, a full node is “a program that fully validates transactions and blocks.”

Because Bitcoin is operated by no central authority, volunteers like Finney leverage computing power to help keep the network and code in operation.

Hal Finney is one of the earliest Bitcoin testers to corroborate with the network’s anonymous founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, in its early days. On January 12 2009, he received 10 Bitcoin from Satoshi—the first Bitcoin transfer ever conducted. Indeed, many today within the Bitcoin community believe Finney likely was Satoshi—or at least part of a group of developers behind the pseudonym, although he often denied this allegation.

Tragically, Finney passed away from ALS in August 2014, leaving both him and Satoshi absent from Bitcoin’s future development. As such, the Bitcoin faithful treat Finney’s old messages, tweets, and forum posts as treasured artifacts—as they do messages signed by Satoshi. The legacy he and his tweet left behind have been critical to adoption of the emerging technology.

We are a part of Team Challenge ALS because we are committed to raising money and awareness to support people right in our community who are living with ALS.  We invite you to join, or support, us "Running Bitcoin" and help us push towards a treatment and a cure for ALS, and at the same time drive awareness for, what we believe, is the most innovative technology of our time.

This is THE EVENT that combines Hal Finney’s love of running and Bitcoin and is raising funds and awareness to help defeat ALS, which claimed his life.
You are challenged to run (or walk, roll, or hike) the equivalent of a half marathon -- cumulatively or all at once -- by the end of January 10, 2023.
From wherever you are, spread the word about Bitcoin, participate in a healthy activity, feel good about doing your part to defeat ALS, and start the year off right!
