During the Ice Bucket Challenge many years ago, everyone was talking about ALS. People we making donations and learning about this terribly tragic illness. However, time has passed and with it so has the awareness.
I lost my father to ALS 10 years ago. My father enjoyed his retirement playing golf daily and going to the gym. However, he started to trip more frequently. He had some difficulty writing. Within months of his diagnosis, he was in a wheel chair.
After meeting people who also had ALS, we realized that we could not complain. Many were young people in their 40s while he enjoyed 12 years of retirement before becoming ill. I have thought about how different my life would have been had he gotten sick while I was a child. It was difficult enough to handle ALS as an adult and I am grateful that I did not experience it earlier.
I am going to ride 70 miles to honor his memory and to help raise money for those that continue to be touched by this terrible illness. I hope you will consider donating to my efforts.
