P.S. Mama, ich hab dich lieb!
I'm participating in Team Challenge ALS to raise funds and awareness to help fight back against this terrible disease. The ALS Association provides much needed patient services resources, funds global, cutting edge research, and much more in order to help those living with ALS right in our community.
Team Challenge ALS is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency of our cause and to push for treatments and a cure.
Challenging ALS is important to me. I'm asking for your help. Please make a donation, join my team, or sign up to be a volunteer today.
A matter of the heart
I'm running the Berlin Marathon 2024
For my mother and all ALS sufferers
I appreciate everyone who takes a moment to read on.
Briefly about me: My name is Rieke, I'm 30 years old and I live in Schleswig-Holstein in beautiful Nordriesland. I like running, but I haven't been running for very long. Nevertheless, I would like to run a marathon - not only for myself, but also to raise awareness for ALS. Some of you may know it from the Ice Bucket Challenge - like me. But I didn't expect to experience this disease up close and personal with my closest family...
Suddenly everything changes: my own mother is diagnosed with ALS. It started at the beginning of 2022 with hoarseness and difficulty swallowing. However, she wasn't diagnosed until October 2022, by which time she could no longer speak and could hardly eat. This was followed by weakness in her arms - trapped in her own body, and there is no chance of full recovery. We are trying everything: medication, participation in studies, physiotherapy, speech therapy, electrical therapy. But none of this is stopping the disease. It sounds harsh and it is - I'm watching my mother die and she's fully conscious during it. That can't be right! That's why something urgently needs to be done in research. You feel helpless. The only thing you can do, apart from being there for her and helping where help is needed, is to contribute to research - and you can do that too!
The entire donation will go to the American organization ALS Association, which is involved in research projects worldwide. This means that every donation counts towards this cause. Thank you for reading this far. And thank you very much if you decide to make a donation.
Many thanks also to the entire ALS Association team, without whom this would not have been possible.

P.S. Mom, I love you!
