    VIC'S STORY

“You have ALS.” Those were the last words I wanted or expected to hear from my doctor at the Anschutz hospital on a beautiful October day in 2018. But it began to make sense after a year of back procedures and surgeries to address a problem with my walking. The initial fog created by those three words has now cleared and I am now preparing for a journey that will surely test me in unexpected and powerful ways. One thing I have learned in the short time of knowing the diagnosis is that family and friends have been a source of joy and positive energy for me. Even though I am a very private person, I realize that I need family and friends to walk with me on this journey. So to those who have tuned in, thanks from the bottom of my heart. God bless!

    TEAM GULAS

When we learned of Victor's journey, we approached Maureen and Vic with a suggestion to raise funds for the ALS Association in Vic's name. Following thoughtful consideration, Vic and Mo approved this effort with the only stipulation that any funds raised be equally divided between national research and patient services and support for the Rocky Mountain Chapter. "Team Gulas" members responsible for this website and fund-raising effort include: Nariman Ghafoori, John Moutes, Murli Tolaney, Bob Uhler and Ed Wetzel who are all former professional colleagues and good friends of Vic at MWH Global, Inc. (now Stantec, Inc.)

HOW THE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES DIRECT SUPPORT THROUGH ITS CHAPTERS

The Rocky Mountain Chapter assists families by guiding and supporting each of them while living with ALS:

    • A mother caring for her 24-year-old daughter, who has been living with ALS since she was diagnosed on her 20th birthday, appreciated the ability to bathe her daughter under running water for the first time in years after we delivered a special tub-slide rolling shower chair.
    • A husband, having to learn how to care for and move his wife from the hospital bed to a power wheelchair came into our Learning Lab (equipment demo room) to learn how to use a patient lift and dress his wife while in bed both safely and carefully, so as not to hurt her or himself.
    • The wife of a person with ALS and their daughter came to their first support group and felt enormous relief in knowing that they were not alone in this journey and that answers to their questions on how they move forward and live with ALS were only a phone call away to their Care Coordinator at the Association. The family was able to connect with others that are not only dealing with the devastating physical changes, but dementia, as well, and the compounding effect.

As people with ALS access better treatments, they are living longer, fuller lives, providing an opportunity for programming to grow and evolve at the Chapter. The Association aspires to offer $1,000 Quality of Life Grant for each person with ALS every year to help offset a wide range of expenses associated with the disease. Your gift can help make this aspiration a reality.
