ALS is truly a devastating diagnosis and prognosis. I am, however, very grateful that my journey through this disease is deeply eased by my partner’s love and caring, friends’ support, and having the financial resources to purchase adaptive equipment (stair lift, walker with wheels, high tent with cot) to make life easier and to travel with accessible tour companies.
Every time I feel this gratitude I am brought to tears by a question: how do others make it through, especially when they don’t have the financial resources to re-do a bathroom, purchase a wheelchair that fits them properly, afford time out with accessible travel, have in-home services? It’s inconceivable and heartbreaking to me.
Although there is nothing any of us can do that will change my prognosis, we can make the same road easier for people who have less than I do. So, we have launched this Chateau Seaview Fund which will provide grants in the greater Bay Area to people with ALS and their families for:
- Purchase and loan of durable medical equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, shower transfer benches)
- Purchase of adaptive devices (e.g. speech, gadgets)
- Home modifications (e.g. stair lifts, ramps)
- Caregiver support
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Support for children living with one or more adult with ALS
We invite you to join us in making this road a bit easier for others. It would mean a lot to us.
