Fighting for my Father

We need to let people with ALS know they are not alone.  ALS affects more than nerve cells and muscles, it affects families, friends, co-workers, and communities.

With no known cause or cure, ALS challenges the human spirit and tests the courage of everyone touched by this devastating disease.

It is hard to imagine my dad crumbling under anything.  I just think of him making me laugh as a child high up on his shoulders in our back yard... my dad holding me up after a hard day of manual labor.  It seems like he has always been the strongest man on earth.  He grew up in the depression with 16 brothers and sisters -picking cotton as a child just to survive.  As an adult, he shared whatever he made, as a concrete truck driver, with his extended family.  He has always been one to give to everyone.  He is extremely loving and an amazing story teller.  He still makes us all laugh at 82 years old.  His grand-daughter, when she was very young - once described him as her "hero."  He now has a great grand-daughter and loves her to death. When he was diagnosed this past summer with ALS, it seemed like many people thought, because he is so much older, that there need be no rush to treat him or worry about the disease as much.  But, to us - his family - every day of his life is just as valuable as any one of ours.  We want to him to live and thrive for many years to come!!!

I am writing to you about a giving opportunity to help cure a disease that seems so confusing and relentless.  I feel so tired writing this...trying to work a full-time job, dealing with my own health issues and trying to still find time left each day to do something for my dad...but I do not know what.  It is the kind of disease that is difficult to treat and leaves us feeling powerless in its' wake.  If you are thinking of giving and undecided...I will share a bit of advice my dad has always given:  "Do SOMEthing even if it is wrong!"  That is why I am writing today - because I want to do something...even if it does not seem like it is enough.
