Once again, Thank you for helping me reach our Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising goal and for embracing this cause! The Walk to Defeat ALS raises funds to support those like Fr Jim, who are affected by ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Words are not enough to express my gratitude to all who poured so much love and support on Fr Jim, those who are diagnosed with ALS, and their caregivers.
Here is a message from Father Jim:
September 23, ALS walk – Olympia/Tacoma.
What an exciting moment it is when parents watch their child take their first step.
Wobbly, unsure, and often hesitant, there is that inner human dynamic to get up off the floor and walk.
Walking upright with one’s head looking around, taking in the surroundings, and listening to the sounds was something I always took for granted. But not now. Walking is difficult and tiring. It is often uncertain. It is also fraught with danger, the danger of falling and hurting myself. I can no longer walk upstairs. I can no longer trust myself to walk outside alone. So I am more excited than ever to invite you to participate in this year’s ALS walk for a cure. We anticipate many more folks joining us as we combine Tacoma walk here in Olympia. We are grateful to have the support from staff of the ALS Association. If you are unable to be present in person, please consider making a financial contribution to the St. Michael the Archangel team. You can make checks out to "ALS Association". All the proceeds will go for the support our local ALS community, which assists persons with ALS and their caregivers. Thank you for your generosity. I look forward to seeing you there. Many blessings to you and your loved ones. Father Jim
Also, some information on Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: ALS is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.
That’s why I’m walking. To change the statistics. To bring help and hope to those living with the disease. To ensure that no one ever hears the words: “You Have ALS” again.
The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
But, we can’t stop now. The key to a cure begins with you.
Please consider walking with me or sponsoring me. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease.
With Faith, Prayers, and gratitude,
Benedetta
