THANK YOU for finding my fundraising page and helping me reach my Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising goal! Last year we raised over 9K in a very short time. We have a lofty TEAM goal of 10K this year and I have a personal goal of $3000.00. Please continue reading to find out why these fundraising efforts are so important to me!
This walk is personal for me!
8 1/2 years ago, I started losing grip strength in my right hand. After many doctor appointments and tests at many different types of specialists, they finally determined that my condition was ALS. My loss of grip strength led to overall weakness in my right arm to the point were I currently have no function at all. Slowly, my progression is moving to my left hand, where I have limited function, to my legs that get tired easy and my breathing while laying down. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.
I am considered slow progressing, you see the average life span after onset of symptoms is 2-5 years. I feel blessed that I still lead a fairly normal life. I still work full time, for a great company, Bergquist, that supports me fully and helps with anything I need to make my job easier. Moving to Florida a couple years ago has made staying active easier with the warm weather. The cold in Michigan was very hard on me. .
The Walk to Defeat ALS raises funds to support those affected by ALS, like me and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. I recently became an advocate for ALS and a voice for those who can't. I am in contact with our government officials locally and in Washington to help them understand the urgent need for treatments and trial drugs to be approved by the FDA quicker and readily available to everyone in need. There are no currently no cures or any treatments that have been very effective.
I walk to change the statistics.
I walk to bring HOPE & HELP to those living with this horrific disease.
I walk to ensure no ever hears the words "You have ALS" again!
The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
But, we can’t stop now. The key to a cure begins with YOU!!
Please consider walking with me or sponsoring me. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people, like me, affected by this disease.
