How ALS has touched my life and why I Walk to Defeat ALS -
As many of you know, I lost my my mother, my best friend, to ALS. It was devasting to our family and we thought that we would have more time with her before she left us. We knew there was no cure but had no idea that less than a year after her diagnosis she would lose her battle with this horrible disease.
Please consider taking part in this year's new walk location, Safety Harbor Marina. Afterwards enjoy the beautiful town with its many shops, restaurants, and galleries.
If you cannot attend the walk, you can become a "Virtual Walker" which allows you to raise funds for our team also. You can even use social media which makes it so easy. The more people that spread the word the more opportunities to donate. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease. I encourage you to get your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers involved!
For those of you who have never taken part in an ALS walk it is truly inspiring to see everyone come together to support one another in trying to reach a common goal. A goal to find a more effective way to treat ALS and even more importantly find a cure. Although my mother is no longer with us, we must continue to fight for a cure for this disease. A disease that can hit you withought warning and discriminates against no one - young, old, strong, weak, male, female - it doesn't matter. And when it strikes, there's no stopping it from what will inevitably be the outcome. It amazes me that with all of the technology in this world that we still haven't found a cure for Lou Gehrighs Disease, but we must keep trying!
Thank you for helping me reach my Walk to Defeat ALS(R) fundraising goal! This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Why We Need Your Help
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the mean time it costs an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
