Event: | Jacksonville Walk |
Date: | Saturday, April 6, 2024 |
Team: | Wimpee's Whippets & Jo's Mountaineers |
This year again I am walking in memory of Bill Wimpee and also in memory of my late wife Jo, who lost her battle to ALS January 23, 2008. She was nine months short of her 59th birthday. Jo started to have symptoms in November 2004, but was not diagnosed until July of 2006. She loved snow skiing, aerobics, running and all kinds of outdoor activities. She loved people and people loved her. This terrible disease took away little by little her ability to do the things she loved to do and all other things we take for granted, such as eating, talking, walking, until there was nothing she could do for herself.
I want to thank you for helping me reach my Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising goal and our team's overall goal. This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Our goal this year is $300,000 and I hope we exceed this goal. Please help us find a cure and a treatment for this cruel disease. Our first walk in Jacksonville was 2004 and $23,000 was raised. This is our 16th walk and we hope our trend continues to grow in donations to help researchers find what causes this disease and to help families coping with ALS.
Please consider walking with me or sponsoring me. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease. The ALS Association provides much needed loving, caring support to those going through this crisis. I encourage you get your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers involved!
Why We Need Your Help
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the mean time it costs an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
