The Silicon Valley Walk is being held at Coyote Point in San Mateo this year. We are participating in memory of Mike Fitzgerald (pictured above). He was diagnosed with ALS on 6-17-2006 and passed away on 2-12-2012. He fought the disease courageously, and contributed to the fight as a strong advocate for the ALS Association.
IBEW Local 617, will again be recognized as a local sponsor and made a generous donation to the walk. Local 617 has been contributing to the Napa Ride to Defeat ALS since 2006 and to this event since it has been held in San Mateo. Mike was also a member of IBEW Local 617, which makes this all the more meaningful to have the Local contribute to the walk.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease.
The past few years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
But, we can’t stop now. The key to a cure begins with you. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease.
Thank you!
