My name is Tracie and I have upper motor neuron disease aka PLS, or primary lateral sclerosis. This disease is very smiliar to ALS but is slow-progressing and not terminal. They share many of the same symptoms and it has drastiscally impacted my life and the lives of my loved ones.
As if that one disease wasn't enough, I also found out at age 47 that I was born with a genetic disease called Charcot Marie Tooth disease or CMT. (Go big or go home I guess is my motto!🙄) It is debilitating as well and there's no cure for either & both are progressive. So 6 letters of the alphabet, CMT & PLS have changed my life forever.
I will be participating in the annual ALS Associations Walk To Defeat. It is an annual fundraiser and my chance to give back to an organization that's done so much for me.
This year I am walking in memory of a dear friend who also had PLS. I met Pat Vaughan, a 71 year old man from Missouri through a Facebook PLS group page and little did I know the impact he'd have or the special place in my heart he would forever hold. He sadly passed away in July 2023. He impacted sooo many PLS'ers. He was full of wisdom and was my go to for advice on a wide range of topics. I will miss his humor, friendship and sarcasm. I cannot think of a better way to honor his memory than walking for me, him and all the others affected by these diseases and the relentless battle we endure. I will forever be grateful I had the opportunity to come to know him.❤
This ALS walk helps fund research for treatments and cures but also provides resources to others like me, free of charge. The Indiana ALS Chapter has done so so much for me and my family and is a wonderful organization. This is my opportunity to give back and help others like me.
