Help me raise money to find a cure for ALS!
Aaron's Page - SIZZLN' OUT ALS!!!
Event: | Kansas City Walk |
Date: | Saturday, September 28, 2024 |
Team: | Mike's Goofy Friends |
Mike's Goofy Friends will be walking again this year in memory of my Father, Mike Ginther, who passed away last year from ALS.
The money raised by the Walk to Defeat ALS goes towards patient care and research to find a cure. After my dad was diagnosed, the ALS foundation provided counseling and encouragement, literature, and free assistive devices from the association's loan program. It was clear the volunteers and staff loved their work and most importantly genuinely cared for their patients.
For those that may be uncertain of what ALS is and how it impacts a person, please allow me to offer a short explanation. The disease attacks the motor neurons that are responsible for sending messages between the brain and muscles. As the neurons die there is a breakdown in the sending of nerve impulses to the muscles ultimately resulting in weakness. At this time there is no cure.
We miss my dad very much but are calmed knowing he no longer has to suffer from this unforgiving disease. The deep impression he has had on us will not be forgotten. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of those impacted by ALS.
Prior to my father's diagnosis with ALS, I honestly knew very little about the illness. I had heard of Lou Gehrig's Disease as a kid, and during college I had read Tuesdays with Morrie; however, I still did not have a close connection.
The summer of 2009 is when my dad first began having symptoms. The early signs vary between people but for my father it began with hoarseness and fatigue. I can still remember going to a truck show in Riverside, Missouri with him that September. Ordinarily my dad would walk through and look at each car once and then want to go back again for a second and sometimes a third time to view each vehicle again. This time however we only walked the show area once and had to take a break at a park bench midway through.
It was not long after, on September 29, 2009, when my family and I learned what my dad was up against. While my dad had been fighting the disease for several months already it was only after a series of tests, each with the purpose of eliminating other possibilities, we discovered it was ALS.
Over the course of the months to follow we as a family did our best to help him at each stage. It was during this time we learned firsthand the love our friends had for my dad, and we took comfort in the support and prayers offered by so many.
My dad lost his battle with the disease on August 4, 2010. Although his courageous fight has ended, we as a family are continuing the battle for him. We want to raise awareness of the disease while at the same time we hope to provide support to the families impacted.
Thank you for taking the time to view my Walk to Defeat ALS webpage!
