We had heard of ALS. Seen the Ice Bucket Challenges, knew of the
"famous" people who had it, seen the old film clip of Lou Gehrig. We
knew it was out there, knew it was an awful disease. But...until it
strikes someone you know...someone you love...you cannot imagine the true brutality and despicable nature of this disease.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. Some, like Mama Char, don't get even that long. ALS can strike anyone, Mama was healthy and active before her diagnosis. Within less than 18 months, we lost her. Tragically, at present, there is no known cause or cure.
That’s why we're walking. Not just to honor Mama, but to change the statistics. To bring help and hope to those still living with the disease. To ensure that no one ever hears the words: “You Have ALS” again.
The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
But, we can’t stop now. We won't stop. Will you join us?
Please consider walking with us or sponsoring us. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people like Mama Char, affected by this disease.
Thank you and God Bless you,
Team Mama Char
