The Hoffman Hikers walk to honor all four of our family members who have fallen to this disease. The Hoffman name comes from our family matriarchs, Bev Connelly and Doris Steffen, whose maiden names are Hoffman. This is our 24th year walking to defeat ALS! Please join us!
ALS has greatly affected our family. We have lost many family members to this horrific disease. It started with Doris, who fought bravely but succumbed to ALS in 1987. Doris' cousin Sharon contracted ALS next, and lost her battle in 2001. Doris' sister Bev Connelly was the next to endure a fight with ALS, and passed away in 2004. The latest devastating loss was in 2012, when Carol Nelson, Doris' daughter, suddenly started slurring her words, and quickly lost the ability to speak all together. It was then that the doctors discovered and diagnosed her with ALS. She succumbed to the disease just two years later.
Though the loss and pain our family has endured has been difficult and heart-wrenching, we have come together again this year to honor our family members and raise money toward helping victims who are currently living with the disease, and toward discovering a cure for this debilitating and deadly condition. Thank you for your help and donations.
Why We Need Your Help
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
