WELL, HERE WE ARE AGAIN!

As many of you know, I was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. For me it began with speech issues, balance, and arm/hand strength. I am currently taking all 4 medications approved for slowing progression. We continue to adapt as things change. The move to a motor assist trike keeps me cycling, hiking poles keep me walking on moderate terrain. I just recently discovered I can no longer swim- yikes. Do they make adult arm swimmies?! :)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis, although I appear to be progressing a bit more slowly (fingers crossed). ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.

That's why we are walking- and yes, I am lucky enough to still be walking! We walk to bring help and hope to those living with the disease.

The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families. Two of the medications I take were just approved in those two years.

The key to a cure begins with all of us. We have high hopes that my progression will continue to be slow, and that perhaps a cure can be found in my lifetime.
