EVERY WALK IS A GIFT

As many of you know, I was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. For me it began with speech issues, balance, and arm/hand strength. I am currently taking 3 medications approved for (hopefully) slowing progression. We continue to adapt as things change:

• The move to a motor assist trike keeps me cycling.
• Pool noodles and warm water keep me 'swimming'.
• I use a cane for walking short distances, and a fun little motorized wheelchair for long distances that we laughingly call the Electric Chair!
• I can still walk with assistance!
• I can still speak well enough to be understood!
• I can still swallow and eat solid food!
• I use a bi-pap machine at night but can still breathe!

I utilize Physical Therapy, Massage, Acupuncture, Energy Work, and Chinese Herbal Medicine in addition to traditional therapies. I have completed voice banking in preparation for when I lose my ability to speak.

My husband, Russ, utilizes skiing, cycling, music, and walks to maintain his mental health. He is in this as much as I am and does most of the heavy lifting, such as chores, shopping, and cooking. I am so lucky.

The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, an expanded access program to trial drugs for those of us who are not eligible for clinical trials, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
