Thank you for helping me reach my Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising goal! The Walk to Defeat ALS raises funds to support those affected by ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
I walk for my grandfather, who recently lost his long fought battle against ALS. I walk in his honor and in support of him, and every other person who has been impacted by ALS in any way. I walk in the hopes that the money I raise, and the support I gather for the disease, will in some way in the future aide in the fight against ALS, and the search for the cure.
ALS, known officially as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive and fatal neuromusuclar disease that slowly robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. On average, a person with ALS lives 2-5 years after diagnosis. My grandfather received his official diagnosis in April 2022, and fought hard against the disease until December 2023. ALS knows no bounds, and can affect anyone at any moment. People of all ages, all genders, all races, etc can be affected by and/or diagnosed with ALS at any moment in their life. Presently, there is no known cause or cure.
That's why I walk. There was not a cure, nor a known cause or reason, for my grandfather. As a family, what we considered "normal" changed drastically in an instant when my grandfather began to show signs of the disease. Just like it is for many other people and families that are affected by ALS, our lives were forever changed by the disease. It is my firm belief that nobody should ever have to suffer through what ALS does to a person, whether that be the person that is directly diagnosed with the disease, or the family, friends, and communities that surround that person.
Even though it cannot change the outcome of my personal experience with the disease, I would take any chance to have the outcome of someone else's experience changed. That is why I'm walking. To change someone else's experience, to bring help and hope to those living with the disease, to those affected by it in any way. I will fight for the chance to ensure that nobody ever has to receive that terminal diagnosis of ALS ever again.
If that is to be obtained at any point in time, the ALS association needs our support and our help. The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
But, we can’t stop now. The key to a cure begins with you.
Please consider walking with me or sponsoring me. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease.
