My cousin Mike was a person I looked up to as I was growing up. As the youngest of four cousins, we played and experienced life together when our families would gather for birthdays, holidays and everything in between. Vicki and Michael are like siblings to me and my sister, Karen. It was very, very hard for everyone when Mike was diagnosed with ALS and so we walked. We followed my cousin Vicki, Mike's kids, and Mike's family to support them in their grief, to share our own grief, and to join the millions of others families with loved ones that were affected by this stupid disease. 

I have dumped ice over my head, I have walked this mile walk a few times, and, this year, we are returning to walk in honor of Mike and the 10th anniversary of his passing.

Here's a little more information about ALS:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.

The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.
