Thank you for joining Team Esperanza! Together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This will be our third year walking together and we hope you'll join us!
ALS is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
For those of you new to our page, we want to share a bit about the meaning of our team name. Esperanza means hope in Spanish and Javier's parents started La Esperanza Bakery in Sacramento over 50 years ago with a dream of serving the Mexican-American community.
Javier continues to keep this dream alive. He is a man grounded in faith and hope. He has shared these values with his family and community. That’s why we're walking. To change the statistics. To bring help and hope to those living with the disease. To ensure that no one ever hears the words: “You Have ALS or PLS” again.
We have been blessed in that it appears to be progressing on the slower side (like PLS) but with this disease you don't have a clue what trajectory it can take. We thank all of our family and friends who have provided encouragement and incredible faith support.
Please consider joining our community and walking with us or sponsoring us. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease.
