BECOME A JASON’S WOLF PACK TEAM MEMBER:
On October 6, 2024, I’m joining hundreds of participants for the ALS Association Walk to Defeat ALS at De Anza Cove, located at 3000 North Mission Bay Drive in San Diego, California, and I need your help! With your help, we can make a difference for people living with ALS and take steps toward eradicating this disease.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) affects the motor neurons in a person’s brain and spinal cord. When the motor neurons die, the muscles waste away. Gradually, it robs the person of the ability to walk, speak, eat and eventually breathe—all while their mind remains sharp. Although, some patients have lived several years after receiving an ALS diagnosis, the average life expectancy is only two to five years.
Despite all that is not known about the disease, there is evidence that ALS occurs in men more often than in women; and is twice as likely to affect/be diagnosed in military members (past and present) than in the rest the population. According to the ALS Care Database, 60% of the people with ALS in the Database are men and 93% of patients in the Database are Caucasian. Most people who develop ALS are between 40 and 70, with an average age of 55 at the time of diagnoses. However, cases of the disease do occur in individuals in their twenties and thirties.
Therefore, I am walking in honor of, and on behalf of an amazing man whom cannot, in order to help The ALS Association fund vital care service programs throughout our nation. The money raised helps to fund: support groups, respite care, specialist consultation, medical equipment loans, research, and helps to offset the financial burden on the ALS patients and their families for necessary medical care.
In addition, to what is covered by their Health Insurance, each year there is an additional $200,000.00 in required medical care expenses, which is not covered by their insurance; therefore, the sole responsibility for the additional cost is absorbed entirely by their families.
The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association Greater San Diego Area Chapter has set a target goal of $500,000, to be raised during the 2024 Walk To Defeat ALS Fundraising Campaign; to allocate to the fore mentioned categories. I hope that you will join the movement to help in assisting to reach, or surpass this goal.
However, the purpose of this letter is not to solicit fundraising dollars; but rather, I am writing to request that you become a member of my team: JASON’S WOLF PACK (In the event that you are in California or in the event that you are willing to travel to California this October). “This event is to spotlight the fact that, ALS won’t stop; therefore, neither can we!”
The Walk to Defeat ALS is currently scheduled to take place on the morning of Sunday, October 6, 2024; this year will be the 24th Anniversary of the walk. Therefore, I am asking you to schedule this event on your calendar. If you decide to join my team, please reach out and let me know your t-shirt and sweatshirt size.
In addition, I have provided The ALS Association Greater San Diego Chapter Area website, so that you can register online as my teammate. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS AND CO-WORKERS TO JOIN US!
If additional information is required, please call me, text me or e-mail me. I thank you in advance for your time and cooperation.
Respectfully,
Marya L. Nixon, JWP Team Captain
