I'm raising money and walking to defeat ALS. In 2010 my mother passed away from ALS. She was a vibrant active woman who could never sit still. She was either working in her flower gardens, keeping her home tidy or chasing after her grandchildren. She loved to move and to dance. She so enjoyed a sunny day! She was never sick which is why when she started tripping, falling and becoming weak we grew concerned. It took a few years to diagnose but in the winter of 2010 we were told it was ALS. From that day on we made it our mission to keep her as comfortable as we knew how because by that time the disease had begun to affect her ability to walk, talk and swallow. She was never left alone, being one of 5 siblings we took turns just sitting with her, watching all her favorite shows and playing endless games of 31 (her favorite card game). As sad as it was to lose her it was comforting to know she was no longer in pain. To this day I think of her watching over us from above, dancing above the clouds.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.

That’s why I’m walking. To change the statistics. To bring help and hope to those living with the disease. To ensure that no one ever hears the words: “You Have ALS” again. 

The past two years have brought incredible advancements in ALS research, expanded access to care for people living with ALS, and enabled legislation that impacts the quality of life of people with ALS and their families.

But, we can’t stop now. The key to a cure begins with you.
