Thank you for helping me reach my Walk to Defeat ALS® fundraising goal! As the chairman for the Memphis Walk to Defeat ALS, I believe this is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Terry was a son, a brother, a father, a friend and my beloved husband. He was full of energy and life. He always wanted to be in the middle of the action whether it was with family or friends, in Destin or at a UT football game. We were raising two beautiful children. We worked hard for a wonderful and exciting future. At 47, all of those plans were cut short by Terry's diagnosis of ALS. We were devastated. However, with faith, family, friends and the support of the ALS Association, we were able to keep Terry in the middle of the action. We loaded Terry up in his wheelchair and took him to UT football games and the beach. Friends and family kept our home filled with love and support. We maintained sanity and strength through prayer and the support services provided by the ALS Association. With great courage, Terry lived with ALS - oh, how he lived!
My involvement with the ALS Association is one way that I can honor Terry's life. He was very aware of the fact that we were blessed. We had the resources available to us that allowed us to maintain a high quality of life for Terry throughout the debilitating progression of this monstrous disease. Many do not. With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease.
Why We Need Your Help
Commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the meantime it costs an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
