Ben and I attended Howard University together in the eighties. We are both members of the Divine 9, black collegiate Greek Letter Organizations. He represented Alpha Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and I, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Beta Chapter. In the spirit of brotherhood and friendship, I would like to dedicate this effort to his memory. Please note, I received the blessings of his mother (Mrs. Edna James),  brother (Robert), wife (Kellye) and son, (Benjamin IV).

Ben was diagnosed with ALS in the summer of ‘86 and fought very hard but lost his battle in winter of ‘87 at the age of 25. He and Kellye had a son, Benjamin IV (pictured in his lap).

Through the years, every time I heard those three letters, ALS, I thought of him and his intense fight against this very tough and fatal disease.

Some of you may recall that I participated in the '22 walk; however, last year I received a heart transplant.  This year I return stronger than ever! Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone and presently there is no known cause or cure.
