WELCOME TO MY WALK PAGE!
Once again, I want to thank you for helping me attempt to reach my Walk to Defeat ALS® fundraising goal! This year, I am even more dedicated to ensuring my team, Angie's Angels, not only reaches its goal, but EXCEEDS its goal! This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Why We Need Your Help
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease though support is bringing researchers closer to an answer. In the mean time it costs an average of $200,000+ a year to provide the care ALS patients need.
My Story
As some of you know, I have been a strong supporter of the fight against ALS for many years. Beacuse of this disease, I was robbed of the chance to meet my Grandpap, Richard Pisarcik. At the age of just 45, he lost his fight with ALS, leaving behind a wife and 5 children. Instead of getting to know my Grandpap in person, I was left to old pictures and memories from relatives. Only by attending his alma mater, Washington & Jefferson College, was I able to truly learn more about the man he was.
Since learning of the disease at the age of 10, and how incredibly terrible it is, I have been striving to learn as much as I can about ALS, volunteer as much as I can, and donate both time and money to the constant struggle to find a cure. After thinking I would likely never encounter another loved one who would have to struggle with ALS, my wife's mother, Angie Kazmeraski, was diagnosed in 2010 and subsequently lost her fight with ALS in 2011. Seeing the fight first hand further flamed the passion I have for ensuring that there is a way to find a cure for this atrocious affliction.
