In late January 2024, we lost my father-in-law, Darrell Standish, to ALS. He was diagnosed in January 2020 and fought until the very end. He needed many modifications to his home to accommodate this disability. We need to find a cure for this horrific disease as I have personally seen the damage it causes to people as well as their pockets. ALS is so debilitating that you need to have adaptations for everything as well as caregivers. Thankfully, Darrell was a veteran and was able to get assistance but those that are not a veteran are not so fortunate. My mother-in-law was his primary caregiver along with two others who came to the home. I am grateful that we were to have our kids know their Grandpa however, they only remember him in a wheelchair and not how I remember him before the ALS.

The Walk to Defeat ALS raises funds to support those affected by ALS and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS can strike anyone, and presently there is no known cause or cure.
