WHY WE ARE WALKING

We lost our beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend, Keith Bowyer, on May 16th, 2021 to this dreadful disease called ALS — a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that quickly robbed his body of its ability to speak, swallow, walk and ultimately to breathe. 

But we are still fighting in his memory, and for others like him, to find a cure and to help bring much needed hope to them and their families, because not only does the patient suffer, their loved ones suffer as well. Those closest to the patient struggle with the care of our pALS (patient with ALS) — as we fight for their survival on a daily basis — as their needs get greater and greater. But Keith's example of courage, strength and positivity kept those around him moving forward in this fight. And now we continue fight to help others like this amazing man. 

The ALS Association Greater Sac Chapter has been a tremendous help to his family along the way — navigating this terrifying storm, supporting them emotionally, offering loan equipment, and much-needed advice. We are walking to honor our sweet Keith and to do our part to help this wonderful association continue its amazing work. What is ALS 

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (or ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a devastating disease that can strike anyone, anywhere, and presently there is no known cause or cure. It is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis, and it can cost loved ones an average of $250,000 a year to provide the care for people living with ALS and their families need. The statistics are staggering. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. ALS can strike anyone at any point in their life and presently there is no known cause or cure.
