In January of 2024, my grandmother Marlalee received a devastating diagnosis: an aggressive form of ALS. Within six weeks, this cruel disease robbed her of the ability to eat, breathe, and move on her own, and she passed away by the end of February.
Despite leading a remarkably healthy lifestyle—maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco—my grandmother fell victim to ALS at the age of 74. Witnessing her rapid decline underscored the injustice of this illness.
Before Marlalee's battle, my understanding of ALS was limited, largely shaped by memories of the Ice Bucket Challenge. However, her struggle illuminated the urgent need for greater awareness and support for ALS research and solutions.
On June 8th, I will undertake a significant challenge: running an Ultra Marathon spanning 52 kilometers. This endeavor serves as a tribute to my grandmother's memory and aims to raise both awareness and donations for ALS solutions.
All proceeds from this fundraising effort will be directed to PROJECT HOPE, ensuring that funds remain within British Columbia and the Yukon to support individuals living with ALS. Specifically, contributions will aid in patient care and advance ALS research, with the ultimate goal of establishing a world-class ALS Centre at The University of British Columbia.
By joining me in supporting the ALS Society of British Columbia, you contribute to vital patient services programs and groundbreaking research initiatives. Together, let's make a difference in the fight against ALS. Thank you for your generosity and solidarity.
