Voice your support for clean and healthy fishery habitats

The National Fish Habitat Conservation Act, S. 2080, was introduced on March 5, by Sens. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and Mike Crapo (R-ID). This vital piece of legislation would strengthen a program that has been in place for close to a decade and contributes to river rehabilitations, reservoir enhancements, salt-marsh protection efforts and other fishery conservation projects across the country.

Fish habitat resources are of enormous significance to the economy of the United States providing recreation for 60 million anglers; more than 828,000 jobs and approximately $115 billion in economic impact each year relating to recreational fishing; and 575,000 jobs.

Healthy habitat = healthy fish populations = better fishing!

Please Support S. 2080, the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and an angler who supports fisheries conservation, I urge you to cosponsor the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act (S. 2080).

Our state is fortunate to have many important fishery resources that are a vital part of our quality of life. Overall, recreational fishing has a $115 billion impact on our nation's economy annually, contributing over $11 billion in state and local taxes. The National Fish Habitat Conservation Act will, for the first time, establish a national framework for freshwater and coastal habitat conservation, restoration and enhancement.

The National Fish Habitat Partnership has a direct economic value which exceeds $150 million and has created 1,100 jobs with only $34 million invested since 2006. The perceived long-term value to local communities across the country is $851.6 million and 19,300 jobs created. The total return on investment is nearly 18:1.

I urge you to cosponsor this bill and to work to see the swift passage of the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act to protect both our angling heritage and the health of our nation's aquatic ecosystems. Thank you for your consideration.
