Avera Race Teams are an excellent way for individuals/businesses to participate in the state's largest cancer race while fostering tradition, creating memories, boosting employee morale and team-building skills all while showing your community YOU care!

The Avera Cancer Institute continues to be the leader in cancer care in our community with the most trusted source for cancer information. By joining the Avera Race Against Cancer, you will partner with a leader in the fight against cancer. Since 1989, the Avera Race has donated over $7 million dollars to cancer programs and services. The Avera Race takes pride in funding innovative research, advanced technology and enhanced patient services such as integrative medicine.

Money raised through proceeds from cancer awareness events such as the Avera Race have funded the following programs and services:

Steps for Team Registration

  • You may register your team by clicking the "Register" and "Form a Team" buttons. Deadline for team registration is April 26. 
  • If you create a new virtual team, you will be the virtual team captain.
  • Start recruiting! The Avera Race still encourages teambuilding  (NOTE: Ten registered participants are required to qualify as a team - there is no maximum of registered participants per team).
  • Challenge team members to go the next step and customize their Participant Center to track fundraising goals, send out messages and share fun photos!
  • Be creative with your virtual team; this year's virtual race encourages interaction via social media. Design shirts, make signs, dress up and take pics to share on the Avera Race facebook page and Instagram: use the hashtag #RunThisTown.

Race at your own pace and become a "Sideline Supporter." Join thousands of community supporters and work towards your own "finish line" together, helping local cancer patients and families along the way. Simply select "Sideline Supporter" as your race and receive an official Avera Race shirt. 

Race Packet Pick-Ups

Packet pick-up will be offered on May 6 between 5 and 7 p.m. in a location to be determined. It will also be allowed the day of the event starting at 7:30 a.m.


Can I register offline?

Yes. You can download the offline registration flyer and submit to the foundation office and you will be registered. There is a price difference for both offline and race day registrations. Please note that all offline registrations are $45 and race day registrations are $50. 

When does online registration end?

The Avera Race registration will remain open throughout race day!

Can I register on race day, May 7?

Yes. The registration fee is $45 for both walkers and runners if registering race day only.

Will the 5K and 10K runs be timed?

No, there will be no official timing for those who choose to participate in the 5K and 10K runs. However, we encourage you to share your times on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag: #RunThisTown to show your support and encourage others to do the same!

Is there a time limit for running the 5K or 10K?

There are no time limits on the race routes.

Can I run with a stroller?

We discourage strollers and wagons along the race run routes. However, we do allow them on the walk routes. Please line up near the back of start line for safety purposes. 

What if I cannot pick up my shirt on the new date?

Please make arrangements with family or friends to retrieve your shirt. If that is not an option, you will be able to select at time of registration to have your shirt mailed to you for a fee of $7.50 per registration. Registrations received before April 28 will have their shirt(s) mailed out the week of May 3. Any registration received after April 28 will have their shirt(s) mailed the week of May 10.

I have young children that will be attending the race with me.  Do they need to be registered?

Only registered participants receive an official Avera Race shirt. Children 16 and under receive a discounted registration fee of $15.

Are pets welcome?

With the exception of service and emotional support animals, no pets are allowed.

Will there be special accommodations for wheelchairs?

The Avera Race is ADA accessible. Please call for specific accommodations.

Are there water stops along the route?

Water stations are located on the 5K/10K routes and at the finish line. Please refer to the race route flyer for more information. Water will also be available at the Start/Finish Line.

Will the race be canceled due to inclement weather?

The Avera Race takes place rain or shine!  We do reserve the right to cancel in extreme circumstances. In that event, there will be no refunds and your registration fee will be used as a donation to benefit cancer patients and families served at Avera Cancer Institute.

I am registered but can no longer participate.  Am I able to get a refund?

The Avera Race is unable to process refunds for registrations. If you are unable to participate, you may transfer your registration to another individual, change your registration type to a "Sideline Supporter" so that you still receive an official Avera Race packet or ask that your registration be converted to a donation. Should you wish to update your registration based on any of these options, please reach out using the Contact Us form.

What if I'm injured on the route?

Call 911, otherwise medical professionals and volunteers may be available to assist in the event of an injury on the route.

Can I pick up packets for my friends and family members? 

Yes. Registrants unable to pick up their packets during packet pick-up hours may make arrangements for pick-up. 

I have young children that will be attending the race with me.  Do they need to be registered?

Bring Your Family and Friends

Everyone can participate in the Avera Race Against Cancer. The aerobic warm-up, fun walks, expo area and cool-down breakfast are all designed for family fun.
