Welcome to Steve Johnson's Buzzards Bay Swim page!
I'll never forget my first Buzzards Bay Swim. I had heard about the Swim through friends over a dozen years ago and contacted the Coalition to register for it. As a regular saltwater swimmer, I was always in the habit of using fins in the strong Westport currents and elsewhere in the ocean and moving water. But in those days, as is common in the world of competitive swimming, the use of gear of this sort was not permitted and unfortunately for me the same was true for participants in the Swim.
So initially my application was rejected. I appealed their decision by telling them that I thought I that could be successful at raising money for the Coalition by marketing my effort through my Cambridge (MA) restaurant. A week or so later I heard back from them that they were willing to bend the rules in my case. I was thrilled to have the opportunity and made good on my bet -- that year I ended up being the top individual fundraiser.
The day of the Swim, when they called my heat there were three of us at the start -- a very nice older swimmer from Falmouth, her adorable 11 year-old granddaughter, and me. I decided to name us "The Waterwings Division". I'm happy to say that I won my heat that year! And I'm also proud to say that over the years I've been the top individual fundraiser for the Swim on several occasions.
I'm grateful to the Coalition for the good work that they do helping to keep our local waters healthy and clean for us all to enjoy.
We made a fun little video about saltwater swimming in the Westport River and at the beach -- click on the link to watch. Let's go for a swim!
