Puppy Mill Image Legislative Alert

Urge your representatives to oppose HB 568/SB 519.

Dangerous legislation that would represent a huge step backward in the fight against puppy and kitten mills is being considered by the state legislature.

If enacted, companion bills HB 568/SB 519 would prohibit Tennessee communities from regulating pet dealers and enacting ordinances to prevent inhumanely bred puppies and kittens from being sold in the state’s pet stores. As a result, puppy mills could continue to flourish, and Tennessee residents would be deprived of their right to know where the animals sold in pet shops really come from.

More than 200 localities have enacted retail pet sales ordinances to address the cruelty of pet mills, and Tennessee should not be denied this opportunity. Local communities should be allowed to regulate pet dealers and enact their own appropriate laws without interference from the state legislature.

Please take action today by urging your representatives to oppose HB 568/SB 519.

Thank you for speaking up for animals. Together, we can Save Them All.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent and a proud resident of Tennessee, I respectfully urge you to oppose HB 568/SB 519. These bills would prohibit localities from regulating pet dealers and enacting ordinances to restrict the retail sale of irresponsibly bred companion animals, who often end up in our overcrowded, taxpayer-subsidized shelters.

Citizens should not be deprived of their right to know where the pets they purchase come from. I urge you to protect pets, consumers and taxpayers in Tennessee by opposing HB 568/SB 519.

Sincerely,
