Puppy Mill Image Legislative Alert

Urge your representatives to support S. 1155/H. 1080.

Right now, there are limited protections for consumers purchasing dogs and cats from Massachusetts pet stores, most of which are supplied by pet mills and other disreputable breeders. Consumers don’t have much recourse when they have the all-too-common, heartbreaking experience of bringing home a puppy or kitten that shows signs of disease or injury soon after purchase. Sadly, when the vet bills become unmanageable, these pets often end up in our overcrowded, taxpayer-subsidized shelters.

Fortunately, legislation has been introduced to better regulate animal sales in Massachusetts. Companion bills S. 1155 and H. 1080 would strengthen the state’s pet lemon law by prohibiting pet dealers from selling puppies and kittens under the age of eight weeks, or selling puppies from breeders who have been cited for serious or repeat violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

These sensible and moderate provisions will not only protect pets and consumers, but will help us take a critical step toward a day without puppy and kitten mills.

Please ask your representatives to vote yes on S. 1155/H. 1080.

Thank you for speaking up for animals. Together, we can Save Them All.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent, I respectfully ask you to support S. 1155/H. 1080, which would better regulate dog and cat sales in our state and protect consumers who unknowingly purchase sick animals.

S. 1155/H. 1080 will provide protections for pets and consumers, and will take us one step closer to a day without puppy and kitten mills. Please support this important reform.

Sincerely,
