Global Initiatives in Psychiatry
The
Global & Local Center for Mental Health Disparities seeks to improve the
mental health of our diverse global communities, both locally in the greater
Boston area and internationally. The Center works in over 15 countries from
Africa, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East to uncover
sociocultural factors that influence the diagnosis and experience of psychiatric
illness. By engaging in collaborative, interdisciplinary, and bidirectional
partnerships with local experts, we are able to foster work of local relevance
to our community partners. The Global & Local Center for Mental Health
Disparities relies on philanthropic contributions to fund programs that advance
mental health care and medical training globally.
The
goal of the Liberia Psychiatry Residency Program within the Center is to develop an indigenous
mental health workforce whereby native practitioners will be able to implement
best practices in clinical care, education, and research. Due to the unique
demands of the Liberian population and the mental health care system, many of
the skills required by psychiatry resident graduates will go beyond those which
a typical psychiatric residency program found in other countries would provide.
The Liberia Psychiatry Residency Program includes integrated psychiatry training
for children, adolescents, and adults, and public health education. It also
includes specialty training related to substance use and its effects on mental
health in the community.
