Preston was born on October 9, 2016. He was our little miracle, and our dream come true. He was a perfect, smart, happy, healthy, baby. He loved to smile, and make people laugh. He loved music, and "singing" along with songs on the radio... he loved everyone, and everyone loved him. He was a very special little guy.
On February 28th, what should have been a routine appointment, took a devastating turn... 2 words brought our world to a screeching halt - BRAIN TUMOUR. We were admitted to the pediatric ICU at McMaster immediately. He had surgery the following morning, and it seemed very positive - they were able to remove 100% of the tumor without any damage to the brain stem that it was resting against.
After a biopsy of the tumor, he was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, but unfortunately the type that he had was the most aggressive one the doctors had ever seen, or even heard of. He fought through an extremely aggressive round of chemo - but to no avail. An MRI showed that not only had the tumor returned, but it was bigger and had spread into his brain stem, to the surface of his brain, and down the length of his spine.
We knew we were fighting a battle that we could not win, so we made the extremely difficult decision to do what was best for Preston, and not to put him through any more painful chemo treatments. 5 days later, our little angel flew home. He was 6 months and 2 days old.
Now, there is somewhat of a silver lining to all of this... we decided that when he passed, we would donate his tumours to the Brain Tumour research lab at McMaster. He is the first, post-chemo treatment tumour they have ever had to work with, and his cell line is currently being used to try and develop new treatments for this devastating disease. Our hope is that no family will ever have to go through what we went through again. Let's hope Preston changes the world!
Funds raised by the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada go directly to support Dr. Singh's research lab at McMaster, including the Preston Smith Research fund, as well as many of their other incredible research projects.
On Saturday June 6th, I am walking in hopes that no more Mommies will ever have to say goodbye to their babies.
Please, share his story, and keep Preston's name alive!
Thank you for your support,And most of all, the hope for a cure.
