Support Brain Tumor Research

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a volunteer with the National Brain Tumor Society, I'm writing to ask you to take action to support and protect brain tumor research as you move forward in the fiscal year 2014 budget process. As a community fighting a disease with a five-year survival rate of just 34% and that has seen only four drugs approved in the past thirty years, progress has been too slow. The research funded through NIH is critical to the search for new and promising breakthroughs.

In the past, our country's investments in research have provided hope. Just two years ago, Congress provided funding to NIH that enabled The Cancer Genome Atlas to identify four new subtypes of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), one of the most common and deadliest forms of brain cancer. Because of this new information combined with breakthroughs happening in NIH-funded labs all over the country, we are getting closer every day to truly understanding this disease and how to conquer it. Cuts, like the $1.6 billion NIH is already scheduled to lose through sequestration, could stifle innovation and undermine previous investment for years to come.

Continued investment in the critical research supported by NIH will help provide hope for your constituents living with a brain tumor today and those who will receive that diagnosis tomorrow. Please work with your Congressional colleagues to ensure that NIH is protected and supported in the fiscal year 2014 budget.

Thank you for considering my request.

Sincerely,
