Shining a Light on Patients and Caregivers During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Throughout September, the National Brain Tumor Society has been recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by honoring our most vulnerable brain tumor patients – children – and their families, as they confront the challenges of living with this disease. We've shared stories from our NBTS community – Mac, Luke, and Theo – depicting the twists and turns patients face and the emotional toll experienced by caregivers.

Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children, as well as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in children 14 years old and younger. With such limited progress made in treating pediatric brain tumors, we know the time to act is now. Make a gift today and help to accelerate the rate at which we discover, develop, test, and approve new treatments, while working together to advance a cure.

What's New in Brain Tumor Research

A specific genetic defect known as an “NTRK gene fusion" which is rare in adult brain tumor patients has been identified more frequently in pediatric high-grade glioma patients. This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we take a look at what recent FDA approvals of drugs targeting NTRK gene fusions could mean for this area of high unmet medical need.

October's Race For Hope – Philadelphia Gets Personal for 6-Year-Old Olivia

At 6 years old, Olivia Kathleen Crismond has survived a brain tumor not once, but twice! At infancy, Olivia was diagnosed with a brain tumor and her fierce personality became apparent for the first time to all who knew her. In October 2016, the tumor came back and Olivia underwent surgery again. With her family and friends by her side, she got through surgery and began her recovery, for the second time. She proved stronger than ever and last year started kindergarten with a huge fan base cheering her on and believing in her ability to thrive. Today, Olivia is doing well and looks forward to race day!

Tulips Against Tumors: Order Your Bulbs Today!

Tulips Against Tumors is a perfect way to brighten your garden and give hope to those impacted by brain tumors. For 14 years, NBTS has provided the opportunity to use these beautiful flowers as a special memorial to honor a patient or caregiver, celebrate a survivor, or pay tribute to a family member or friend who has faced a brain tumor. Carefully planted in the fall, these tulips bloom every spring to provide renewed hope for a world without brain tumors.

Defeat Pediatric Brain Tumors Research Collaborative Progress Report

The Defeat Pediatric Brain Tumors Research Collaborative has brought together some of the world's best pediatric brain tumor research teams from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Montreal Children's Hospital/McGill University Health Centre, and the German Cancer Research Center. A report released last week provides the latest progress being made to defeat pediatric brain tumors.

2nd Annual Jones'n for a Cure Golf Tournament Raises More Than $20k

Started in 2018 to honor Rick Jones, this year's 2nd Annual Jones'n for a Cure Golf Tournament engaged more than 150 individuals and raised more than $20k in support of NBTS. Christy Jones and the Jones'n for a Cure committee host this event to honor the memory of Rick's unwavering passion for golf and to support and empower the larger Sacramento brain tumor community.
